The Power of Your Thoughts

The power of the mind is underused. We are what we think we are, and we all have the ability to change the course of our lives instantly. In fact, the instrument that can do this weighs only about three pounds but is responsible for much of what exists in this world. The three-pound instrument I am talking about is the brain, which processes thousands of thoughts per day. For most of us, many of our daily thoughts are negative and, therefore, destructive. The opposite of this is true of successful people and athletes whose thoughts are mostly positive. Imagine that your mind is like a cup—if you fill it to the top with beneficial thoughts, there will not be any room for negative self-talk. Positive thoughts are productive and creative. The moment a thought happens, the manifestation of that thought begins—positive or negative. Take control of your thoughts!

Thought-Stopping Technique

Each time you catch yourself saying anything negative or critical or anything that produces self-doubt (i.e., anything that is not what a champion would say) take a deep breath into your belly and imagine a stop sign or a railroad crossing. As you exhale, say the following:

“Relax . . . I am a great athlete (swimmer, ball player, wrestler, etc.)!” or, “I’ve got this!”

When you do this, you are replacing the negative thoughts with positive thoughts and releasing endorphins (relaxing hormones) as opposed to catecholamines (stressor hormones). Would you rather be relaxed and loose when you are competing or stressed and tight?

Additional:

In our next session, ask me for your silicone bracelet. Take your silicone bracelet that says, “I’ve Got This!” or “I am a Champion.” Each time you catch yourself saying something negative or something a champion would not say, imagine a stop sign, take a deep breath into your belly, and say, “Relax.” Then switch the bracelet to the other wrist and change that statement to a positive statement like, “I’ve Got This!” or “I’m a Champion!”

The goal is to leave the bracelet on one wrist for one full day, then a few days, then a week. Eventually, thinking more positively will become second nature.
